driving. Fortunately for one Anchorage woman, it's
not yet illegal to walk off a cliff whilst text

down a rocky beach cliff on Kodiak Island, in the
northern Gulf of Alaska, while texting on her
cellphone. According to the Kodiak Daily Mirror
[subscription required], Pestrikoff was walking
toward the steep drop to toss a cigarette butt while
attempting to send a message when she slipped on
A friend heard her screams from the rocks below
and called for help. Rescue crews had to act quickly
when they arrived: By the time the Kodiak Fire
Department got to [Maria] Pestrikoff, the tide was
coming in. Rescuers had to act quickly – she was
only about 10 feet from the water's edge.
"The incoming tide was a factor to consider with
regard to expediting the patient's lift and removal
from the beach so as to not introduce cold water
hypothermia as another factor influencing her
injuries," [Fire Chief Rome] Kamai said. Rescuers
reportedly rappelled down the cliff and hauled
Pestrikoff up in a stretcher to a waiting ambulance.

dazzling good looks are really a burden, ruining your
chances of a lasting relationship or marriage?
Physically attractive people enjoy greater success in the
workplace earning more than their plainer counterparts,
writes economist Daniel Hamermesh in his book Beauty
Pays: Why Attractive People Are More Successful but in the
relationship stakes physical beauty might not be such a
Beauty can be a social handicap according to US
psychologist Dr Shauna Springer, a relationship and
lifestyle researcher and author of Marriage, for Equals:
The Successful Joint (Ad)Ventures of Well-Educated
Springer looks at the spectacularly high failure rate of
marriages in Hollywood for clues that beauty can spell
disaster for relationships. Who can forget the 72 day
marriage fiasco between Kim Kardashian and Kris
Humphries (her second marriage), or Jennifer Aniston's
less than five year marriage to Brad Pitt followed by
endless relationship troubles before her recent
engagement to Justin Theroux?
There are a number of obstacles to marriage or long-
lasting relationships for the impossibly attractive,
according to Springer (and the infamous Samantha Brick
may well agree). "Those who are physically beautiful may
need to be especially cautious in assessing the character
of any potential life partners" she tells Life & Style.
"Beautiful people may tend to attract people who are
more likely to treat a person as a possession, people who
seek to display external signs of success to make up for a
rather rotten core self" and "a beautiful person might be
more likely to attract someone who seeks shallow sexual-
economic transactions instead of a loving, respectful
Possessing extremely good looks may also bring
psychological challenges. Some people might assume that
a beautiful person is arrogant and unapproachable she
says. Beautiful people are also "more likely to have a
'spoiled child' element in their personalities - and an
expectation that their wishes will be granted with little
opposition, resulting in an acute coping crisis, an adult
tantrum, when their desires are not met.
Related to this, self-absorption and narcissism may also be
occupational hazards of the beautiful life. Those with these
character traits and behaviours may inspire lust in their
partner's eyes, but reflections of love and respect will be
much more elusive. While they may desire to have a loving
relationship with their partners, they lack the foundation of
good character to achieve this."
Beauty can also bring insecurity says Springer. "Like a
person who is flush with material wealth, those who have
great beauty often struggle with questions about why
people seek them out and what people are really after
when they form relationships with them.
They often ask themselves whether their friends are true
friends or whether they are attaching themselves - by way
of an entourage - because of their obvious physical
So says Springer, while "beauty alone will probably not ruin
a person's chances of having a good marriage" - after all,
it is possible to be beautiful on the inside and out - "it is
beauty in combination with other character deficits that is
more likely to produce this result."
Clinical psychologist Jo Lamble agrees there are
drawbacks to being extremely good-looking. "Most people
believe that beautiful people have it easy" she says, "but
that's not always the case. Being beautiful does have its
downsides when it comes to relationships."
"Some men are drawn to 'trophy wives' to boost their own
feelings of self-worth as if to say: 'Look what I can get! I
must be pretty special.'
This shallow reason for choosing a partner is flawed
because over time, they may need to trade up by seeking
a younger, more beautiful partner to continue the facade
of success. And in the meantime, they may not fully
respect their beautiful partner, because they are only
giving value to their physical beauty, not the person
Lamble goes on to say the most attractive amongst us are
under constant pressure to stay looking good. "Beautiful
people can wonder whether others want to be with them
for their beauty alone.
Beautiful women can feel the pressure to look beautiful all
the time in case their partner no longer loves them if they
not wearing makeup or gorgeous clothes. They can fear
putting on weight or growing old and so they can
sometimes resort to drastic dieting or plastic surgery to
keep the fear at bay."
Perhaps it's time to be thankful you don't look like Angelina
Jolie. Her forthcoming marriage to Brad Pitt might not last
- and in the meantime you can take heart from a study
that suggests beauty is not just skin deep. Researchers
found that judgements about physical attractiveness are
strongly influenced by non-physical factors.
In a rowing team study, team mates of a fellow crew
member who was perceived to be a 'slacker' who did not
pull his weight, was uniformly rated as physically ugly and
another team member with an excellent work ethic was
uniformly rated as physically attractive.
The difference in perceived physical attractiveness did not
exist for raters who knew nothing about the contributions
of the two men to the team.
"Any assumptions that people make about beautiful people
are likely to get corrected over time with sufficient
exposure to an individual's character," explains Springer.
And the researcher's top beauty tip? "If you want to
enhance your physical attractiveness, become a valuable
am unmistakably Muslim.
If you look at me, you'll also see that I'm some garden
variety of Asian. If you talk to me, you'll see how much I
love fantasy novels.
I remember officially putting on the hijab when I was 13.
Like many Muslim kids, I had been prepped for it by my
parents and religious teachers for a few years beforehand.
I was taught that once puberty hits, all the rules I had been
practising start to apply. My new dress code came into
play alongside my five daily prayers and fasting in the
month of Ramadan.
When I was younger, I remember playing soccer with my
cousin and brothers in a t-shirt, jeans, and a small
headscarf. I figured that was akin to training wheels.
Once I made the decision to wear the hijab proper, I
upgraded to long-sleeved jackets or blouses.
I took my decision with the determination of a girl on the
cusp of womanhood, and the only pang of disappointment
I remember was about the loss of my Sunday morning
swimming classes. With the invention of the fabulous
Ahiida burqini, swimming is now another fun past-time.
Being a fruit salad (Mostly Malay, part Chinese, Indian and
a smattering of other traders/colonisers who visited my
motherland) who enjoys travel, I've had some interesting
experiences wearing the hijab in different countries -
Jordan, Malaysia and Australia, to name a few.
When I lived in Jordan, I wore the hijab and the niqab (face
veil) while I worked and studied. This was a choice I made
to help me fit in with a very conservative community of
other Western Muslims.
The local Jordanians who didn't cover their faces must
have thought we were an interesting bunch, but they were
lovely, and welcomed us into their homes.
I wonder sometimes how on earth I survived the blistering
desert summers with my face covered, but it goes to show
people can adjust to all kinds of things. All it takes is faith
and determination. And of course, breathable fabric.
In Malaysia, the land of my ancestors, my experience with
hijab is quite different to the Arab heartlands.
The beautiful, bold colours and patterns of the Malaysian
people would make anyone in a black niqab stand out.
Most Muslim women in Malaysia don't cover their faces,
and I wouldn't even try with the humidity.
The great thing about wearing hijab in Malaysia is that
nobody bats an eyelid. I feel comfortable because it's
common knowledge that Muslim women in hijab are active
participants in the public sphere - doctors, lawyers,
government officials, and even members of the Malaysian
Additionally, being Malay in Malaysia means I look like the
majority of the population. Imagine that! That's a novelty
for me, having lived as part of a racial minority for most of
my life in Australia.
People only start looking at me funny when I start to talk.
Almost two decades of living in Sydney has given my
spoken Malay an odd twang, and that is when savvy
shopkeepers start to hike up the prices. The irony.
When it comes to wearing the hijab in Sydney, my
experience depends on where I've lived. Living in Lakemba
brought a similar kind of anonymity. I fit right in with a lot
of the locals who are dressed like me.
Sure, there's a whole spectrum of how you wear hijab,
ranging from the long, billowing mono-coloured style with
a black abaya (Arab-style one-piece gown) to the chic,
vibrant style with kaftan tops and jeans.
There is space for self-expression, and I'm comfortable
with my trademark outfit that makes my mother wonder if
I have no other clothes - my pink scarf, turquoise cardigan,
purple blouse, black skirt and Skechers.
My wardrobe is a non-issue for me because my hijab isn't
something I think about every day. It's just part of who I
am. Still, every now and then, I get asked "Aren't you hot
in that?" In the summer, my answer is, "No, because I'm
Nobody asks me if I'm hot in the winter because we're all
freezing and extra coverage only means more warmth.
Winter is my favourite month for attempting some
semblance of fashion.
I profess a great love for winter coats, colourful neck-
scarves and boots. Summer, on the other hand, is all about
surviving the heat by being smart with fabrics and direct
sun exposure. Cotton or cotton blends are a life-saver, and
so is wearing colours that deflect the heat i.e. dropping
blacks and upping the light pastels.
Wearing the hijab in Lane Cove, on the other hand, makes
me really stand out and feel a bit more aware of what I
look like in the public eye. Thankfully, folks there are the
polite sort who don't gawk at me, and I've found that when
in doubt, I smile. And that helps.
On my self-conscious days, I start to wonder if people are
staring at me, and this is amplified after media debacles
When I'm feeling positive about the world, I don't notice
anything unusual, and I just go about my errands. I've
come to a happy realisation that most people out there
are willing to keep an open mind, and they are much more
interested in their own day-to-day lives than what I'm

It is no secret Steven Spielberg is at his best working in
