Yoruba Culture Symbol, Ori Olokun Unveiled In Ile Ife Osun State

Osun state Governor Rauf Aregbesola on Saturday in Ile-Ife unveiled an Ife ancestral monument, popularly called Ori-olokun, as part of activities marking the inauguration of Ori-olokun Garden .

The governor performed the unveiling of the huge Ori-Olokun sculpture at the Ori-Olokun Roundabout, formerly Mayfair Roundabout in Ile-Ife.

He described the monument as a precious heritage of the Yoruba race, and urged the people to protect and preserve it.

Mr Taiwo Olaiya, the Executive Secretary, Ife Central Local Government, under whose jurisdiction the garden is situated, also described the monument as the most famous in history.

According to him, Ori-Olokun monument was discovered in the early 20th century by German explorer Leo Frobenius. "Frobenius could not imagine that such works were of African origin and came up with the theory that this great art was evidence of the lost Atlantis of the Greeks. "He further declared that the Yoruba deity, Olokun, was the same god as the Greek Poseidon. "The monument was further identified as a modern sand casting of a brass, which comprises copper and zinc.

"The name, Olokun, attached to this head refers to thefact that it was dug up in the late 19th century in the Olokun Grove and used in annual rites to honour Olokun ,'' he said.

An Ife priest, Chief Faloba Fagbenro, described Olokun as the goddess of the sea and patronageof bead making, which makes glass bead working an important industry in Ile-Ife .

He recalled that the head of Olokun (Ori Olokun) remained in the hands of the family responsible for the Olokun cult until Oni brought it to the palace for safekeeping in 1934.

The the terra-cotta head of Olokun has been replicated in strategic places of the world, including Latin America, and Europe. The image always brings back to memory the civilisation inthe areas of art and technology that took place in Nigeria and Africa before the British invasion.

King Sunny Ade Guitarist Caught With Cocaine

Fatoke Abiodun, Nigeria's veteran guitarist, who played alongside legendary musician, King SunnyAde for three decades, has been arrested with cocaine, the anti-drug agency said on Saturday.

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, NDLEA, said that Abiodun was arrested on 1 January while attempting to board an Air France flight to Italy at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos, southwest Nigeria.

"We have made the first arrest in the new year. The suspect, a guitarist by name Fatoke Abiodun was foundwith 1.575kg of cocaine. The drug was discovered in the false bottom of his luggage during the outward screening of passengers to Italy," said ,NDLEA Commander the Lagos Airport, Mr Hamza Umar
The agency said the 62-year old grandfather with four wives and many children, is helping narcotic investigators handling the case.

"Fatoke has owned up to the alleged crime blaming his involvement on financial hardship," said the agency's spokesperson, Mitchell Ofoyeju.

NDLEA quoted Fatoke as saying: "I played for King Sunny Ade for 30 years before I was unceremoniously retired in 2007. I was unprepared and without severance money I saw the bitter side of life."
He said his drug trafficking attempt is his first as he didit out of frustration.
"Because at my age I could not provide for my family. I am ashamed of myself," he was quoted as saying.

NDLEA Chairman, Ahmadu Giade described the involvement of Fatoke in drug trafficking as sad and disappointing.
"It is sad and disappointing for a grandfather to be involved in drug trafficking. This is a bad legacy to his children. This is a good start for the agency in the year and a sign that the days ahead will be tough for drug traffickers. The agency will continue to handle every case in accordance with the NDLEA Act," Giade was quoted as saying.

The suspect will be charged to court for unlawful exportation and possession of narcotics, NDLEA said.

Veteran actor, Kelechi Akara, who has also featured in so many Nollywood movies including: 'The Third Generals, My Class Mate, Iron Pant, Tears of the Innocent, Treasure Coffin, David & Goliath' and so many others, has just revealed in an interview that Nollywood can only return to its original glory only if it can bring back auditions the way it was then.

He explained that things have changed from when he started out till now, ''so many things have changed. You hardly see audition notices like before and it affects the upcoming artists that want to join Nollywood. They can now bring anybody from anywhere!

They don't mind if he or she is registered with the Guild and more; how about those who registered for years that have not seen even extras (waka-pass) to play! Are they fools? It's avery good thing for new artistes to come up butthey should do it the right way; from auditions you'll get the best.

These days they call on the phone, if they want to shoot a movie. Some artistes buy gifts or paymoney, so they'll get roles in movies, what a shame. So many of them are desperate and can do anything to appear on screen. But I don't really blame them somehow because things are not done the way it should be done.

THE UNTOLD STORY ABOUT THE MYSTERIOUS DEATH OF MOVIE STAR BISI KOMOLAFE

The Nigerian entertainment industry was thrown into a mourning mood on Monday, December 31st, 2012 when news broke that popular Yoruba movie star,Bisi Komolafe is dead.

The talented thespian died at the University College Hospital (UCH) in Ibadan.
Findings revealed that Bisi battled with an undisclosedillness that kept her in and out of hospital for more than 3 months.

A close friend of the actress revealed to us that Bisi was a few weeks pregnant before the illness started, and that the pregnancy had to be terminated at the hospital to save her life when her condition got worse.

Further digs by us revealed that her death was as a result of several spiritual attacks she suffered lately.

Before Bisi's death she was said to have suffered several spiritual attack and was hospitalized for weeks.

Narrating her sickness and how she died a source who prefers to remain anonymous said "There is no doubt Bisi died of spiritual attack.

She complained about several attacks in her sleep and the many nightmares she had Some people even threatened her through text messages but because of her nature she didn't pick fight with anyone.

We actually thought she had gotten over the attack but is so disheartening that she finally lost the battle."Bisi was a rare gem until her death and she was one lady that family and friends always wanted to be with.

Friends, family and well-wishers have been visiting herfamily house to offer their condolences.

It would be recalled that few months back,Bisi was enmeshed in a husband snatching saga.

The beautiful actress was said to have broken a Canada based Nigerian couple's marriage.

Their names are Oluomotunde Ijaodola and Niniola.

The couple,who are 30 years apiece,got married in 2007 at Abeokuta Sports Centre,Abeokuta,Ogun State capital before relocating to Canada along with their two children,Simi and Dara.While Niniola worked as a nurse,Tunde shuttled between Canada and Nigeria selling cars.

The hubby reportedly had some issues with the wife and Bisi Komolafe was fingered as the brain behind the palaver.

Explaining why she set up the boutique, Helen said: "I have anchored many weddings as an MC. At times, I get disappointed because some brides wear gowns that are not befitting.

On the other hand, when I see those with good gowns, I pass complimentary messages to them. Basically, the decision to float Massive Bridals was a result of my passion to see brides glow on their wedding day."
