Why J.J Abrams Is The Best

J.J. Abrams
This may sound sacrilegious to the legions of hardcore Star Wars fans, but having J.J. Abrams direct Episode VII will be a vast improvement and the best thing to happen to the franchise in a very long time.
Yes, it was incredibly cool in 2005's Episode III - Revenge of the Sith to see the completion of Anakin Skywalker's transformation from plucky, love-struck teen to the embodiment of all that is deeply evil in the galaxy as Darth Vader - to hear him take that first raspy breath from beneath the iconic black helmet. But George Lucas' prequels were, for the most part, soulless, airless affairs and a far cry from the imagination and rough-hewn, can-do thrills of his original trilogy.

You don't go to a Star Wars movie - and watch it 18,000 times, then camp out in front of a theater with your homemade light saber and Yoda sleeping bag waiting for the next one - for the smart, complex dialogue or well-drawn characters.

But with Abrams at the helm and Oscar-winning Little Miss Sunshine screenwriter Michael Arndt crafting the script, there is some hope (a new hope, if you will) that the series finally will be infused with a deeper sense of humanity.

Lucas was correct in calling Abrams "an ideal choice to direct the new Star Wars film" in announcing the selection of a director in a late-night news release on Friday.
And when he told the world in October that he was selling his Lucasfilm empire, including the lucrative and beloved Star Wars franchise, to The Walt Disney Co. for US$4.05 billion, Abrams was at the top of many fans' lists of dream directors.

He certainly was at the top of mine when I pondered what sort of fit various filmmakers might be for this material. Back then, I wrote that Abrams was "the most obvious choice, really. His sci-fi bona fides were already beyond reproach, and he solidified them with his reimagining of the Star Trek franchise in 2009. ... This just makes sense all around."

It's true. If you look at the way he handled the redo of that other revered space series, it might provide some clues as to what his Star Wars might look like.
Abrams clearly aimed to please the broadest possible audience by remaining faithful to the Star Trek mythology in some ways while shaking it up in others; the film made nearly $386 million worldwide and the follow-up, the 3-D Star Trek Into Darkness, is due out May 17.

Some fans were thrilled that he would boldly go to such daring places while some purists balked at the vast departures he took. And that might be true of the response "Episode VII" will get in 2015, when it's scheduled to come out; people tend to get proprietary when they're so emotionally invested in the stories like this.
Abrams' Super 8 from 2011 is another great example of his grasp of, and reverence for, the wonder that can accompany the best science fiction experiences.
His homage to late-'70s, early-'80s Steven Spielberg productions is full of childhood innocence and the excitement of storytelling. And as he demonstrated with these films as well as his contribution to another beloved franchise, 2006's Mission: Impossible III, the man knows how to direct an action sequence.
He also happened to work with Lucas' Industrial Light & Magic and Skywalker Sound on post-production on all the films he's directed, so a comfort level already exists from an effects perspective.
He's a busy guy these days, though. Between steering these two massive franchises, he also has many other projects in the works through his production company, Bad Robot.

Among them: a recently announced biopic of disgraced cyclist Lance Armstrong, a possible Cloverfield sequel and the post-apocalyptic television series Revolution. As talented and visionary as he is, who knows how good of a juggler he'll be?

But Star Wars' influence on Abrams is well-documented, which is cause for optimism; he probably won't come up with some all-singing, all-dancing extravaganza with Jar Jar Binks at the centre.
And he spoke of it as recently as Saturday night at the Producers Guild Awards, where he accepted the Norman Lear Achievement Award in Television for the groundbreaking series he created, including Felicity, Alias and Lost.

He said being chosen to direct Episode VII is "as surreal as it is exciting." Asked what kind of spin he might put on such well-established material, he acknowledged that it was early in the process, but said: "I want to do the fans proud. I want to make sure the story is something that touches people. And we're just getting started. I'm very excited."

Others in the industry already are excited, as well. Modern Family co-star Eric Stonestreet said at the Screen Actors Guild Awards Sunday night that he was looking forward to Abrams' Star Wars based on the success of his Star Trek.

"I have faith," Stonestreet said. "I'm hoping J.J. does J.J., because nobody else is doing it that well."

Arnold Schwarzenegger Caught In Sex Scandal

Arnold SchwarzeneggerArnold Schwarzenegger has been caught in another sex scandal.
Reports have emerged that a photo has surfaced of the action icon performing a sex act.
An image of The Last Stand star, 65, was found boxed up in a storage facility owned by late Penthouse founder Bob Guccione, according to ABC News.

The photos are said to depict a "young Arnold".
No further details have been released about the image.
New Jersey hedge fund manager and art collector Jeremy Frommer told the network he discovered the photo with a trove of other memorabilia. Nude photos of Madonna and then-Miss America Vanessa Williams were also unearthed in the facility.

Frommer purchased the storage unit early last year sight-unseen.
Penthouse publisher Bob Guccione died in 2010. It was 45 years after he launched the famous men's magazine.

Frommer has declined to offer details of where the storage facility is located or how much he paid for its acquisition.
It would not be Schwarzenegger's first time tangled in a sex scandal.
It emerged in 2011 the retired California governor had an affair with his housekeeper Mildred Baena and fathered a son with her over ten years ago.

Schwarzenegger wrote candidly about his infidelity in his memoir Total Recall: My Unbelievably True Life Story.

The illicit relationship prompted the end of his marriage. Journalist Maria Shriver, 57, filed for divorce in July 2011, citing irreconcilable differences.

The estranged couple share four children.

Schwarzenegger's spokesperson has yet to comment on reports

Mike Tyson to appear on Law & Order

Mike Tyson
I suppose it's very nice for Mike Tyson, who was convicted of rape in 1992, that he's getting what he calls his "dream job" - acting on Law & Order: SVU.

The show's fans aren't quite as happy about it and have started a petition to ask NBC to cast someone else in the upcoming episode's role of a man with a troubled childhood who's now on death row.
Tyson's casting on a show that revolves around advocacy and justice for assault victims has sparked a debate about what opportunities people deserve after serving time for a violent crime and what constitutes an attempt at restitution.

We probably won't get good answers to these questions with a debate over SVU. But if showrunner Warren Leight really wanted, as he said on Twitter, "to provoke discussion and awareness" by casting Tyson, it's useful to think about whether this is the best route to that goal - or to good television.

Tyson's paid his debt to society and deserves a chance to work in his chosen profession, which is acting.
But it's not as if the man lacks for opportunities. The director James Toback has featured Tyson as himself in his features When Will I Be Loved and Black and White, and he examined Tyson's life in a documentary that premiered at Cannes in 2008.

Tyson's been in both Hangover movies, and Spike Lee produced Tyson's one-man show, Undisputed Truth, which got a Broadway run - an exceedingly rare opportunity.

I don't really think there's any question that Tyson has gotten a fair shot to pursue work in the entertainment industry, even if we're applying a heightened standard to compensate for the idea that there's employment discrimination against people who have been incarcerated.

As for Law & Order, the franchise has a rich history of famous guest stars. Generally, when celebrities play themselves, it's to integrate the events of the show into the real world of New York, as has been the case with cameos by the city's mayors.

Otherwise, major actors are normally cast in roles that shake up our conception of their talents, as Cynthia Nixon did by playing a woman faking mental illness as part of an elaborate vengeance plot in 2007.

As a potentially sympathetic killer, it doesn't sound as if Tyson will be bringing local cred or fading into an out-of-the-box role - and the worry is that the character's proximity to Tyson's life story will somehow whitewash his crimes. Without having seen the episode, none of us can really say.

But Leight better hope that casting Tyson in this part really does lend life experience to the show and deepen the episode. Otherwise, it's SVU handing over its credibility to someone who still hasn't earned it.

Okorocha And Peter Obi Fight Over Sitting Arrangement In Church

Governors Peter Obi of Anambra State and Rochas Okorocha of Imo State have again, allegedly fought each other over sitting arrangement at a recent public function in Imo State. Last year, at the South-East zonal Constitutional Review meeting in Enugu, the two South East leaders allegedly took on each over a sitting arrangement at the function.

Last week Sunday, at the dedication of Holy Family of Jesus, Mary and Joseph Catholic Church in Amauburu IIsi-Ubomiri, Mbaitoli Local Government Area of Imo State, aides of the two governors had a heated argument between them.

gistbank.blogspot.com reliably gathered that Obi had arrived the church, built by Chief Leo Stan Ekeh, Chairman of Zinox Computers, before Okorocha. One of Okorocha's aides then allegedly prevented Obi from sitting on the front row, which sparked off some arguments between Obi's aides and Okorocha's aides, who insisted that the reserved seats were meant for Okorocha and his guests.

It took the intervention of Most Rev Anthony Obinna, the Archbishop of Owerri Ecclesiastical Province, to tell Okorocha's aide that no seat is reserved for anyone in the house of God, especially for late comers.
