Press reports, not confirmed by authorities have claimed that Ion Balint - his real name - use the lions to intimidate rivals and victims.
When he rode away from prison on a black stallion in 2010, Balint played up that fearsome image.
"You said I fed men to the lions?" Balint can be heard saying on a tape heard by The Associated Press. "Why don't you come over and I'll give you some lions!"
Authorities won't speculate about why Balint kept lions and bears, as well as thoroughbred horses and canaries, at his high-walled and heavily guarded estate in the poorest part of Bucharest.
"Many untruths are being reported," Balint's son-in-law Marius Vlad said, referring to other rumours of a torture chamber.
Bystanders and relatives who gathered near the gates of the estate described Balint, 48, as a good neighbour and an animal lover, and said they weren't bothered by roaring lions.
"We can hear them every day but only when they're hungry or the female is in heat," said Gabriela Ionescu,36, robed in a dressing gown and clutching her toddler daughter's hand. "They don't disturb us at all."
Authorities allege that Balint and his brother Vasile headed a criminal network which controlled much of the underworld activity in Bucharest, a city of 2 million.
Some 400 police and detectives were involved in the investigation which led to the arrest last week of67 suspects, including the Balint brothers.
In 2009, Balint was convicted of human trafficking, violence and pimping, and sentenced to 13 years in prison. That was reduced to six years but Balint was free after a year.
On Wednesday the four lions and two bears were sedated, put in cages and removed by environmental authorities and the Vier Pfoten animal welfare charity.
The animals, which generally appeared in good condition, will be temporarily housed in a zoo and maybe eventually relocated in South Africa, animal welfare officers said.
Mircea Pupaza, commissioner of the National Environment Guard, told The Associated Press that Balint had no documentation or health records for the animals, which he's kept illegally for 10 years.
He could face a year in prison and a hefty fine for illegally keeping wild animals.
"The lions are a status symbol for him," said Livia Cimpoeru, a Vier Pfoten spokeswoman. She declined to speculate whether they had a more sinister purpose.

This much she revealed in a chat with Saturday Beats during the week in Lagos.
The Kokoroko crooner says, "There is nothing wrong with going into acting. Mr. Ibu (John Okafor) actually dragged me into Nollywood. He bought a form for me and dragged me into it. So yes, you will soon be seeing me in movies."
Does it then mean she is quitting music?
No way, she replies strongly.
Hear her: "I cannot quit music for anything. I may be the only one singing or acting but I do not work alone. I have people who work with me and try to get the best out of me. I have ideas and I bring them out and my people advise me on them. You cannot do everything alone."
Songs in the diva's latest album, Chorus leader, are currently topping the charts.
There is something that she has to say to women in abusive relationships: Get out fast while you still have a chance.
She is one artiste that has tasted the bitter side of love, having allegedly suffered domestic violence and abuse in her previous marriage. But she told Saturday Beats that she is very happy now.
"I feel really fulfilled now. I am happier, I wake up early in the morning and I am happy and I think that is the way life should be. Not to be living in fear of the unknown. My husband is a very nice guy. The bottom line is that I am happy. As far as I am concerned, this is the first time I am getting married," she said.
She told Saturday Beats that for a man to hit a woman means he can kill her.
Keefee says, "Domestic violence was basically what destroyed my previous marriage. Like I will always say, if you are in an abusive relationship, it is better you take a walk. It is because what the person is doing to you, he may not do it to another person. I have a lot of employees and I have studied them.
"I know that there are things you do to someone and he can take but another person cannot. People are different. The person abusing you might not have the guts to do so to another person. Whatever will make a man to raise his hands to beat you, the man can actually kill you. The worst place to die is in a place like that; where you are supposed to be loved. It is better todie in the battle front, or anywhere.
There are a thousand and one ways to die but that is the worst place to die. Where you are supposed to be loved and cared for, you die there; it is the worst place ever. I do not think any woman should wait for that.
"Look at me, I am an example. People are going to talk; they would definitely say things that are going to hurt you. Things that can cause hypertension; look at Goldie now. A lot of people said nasty things about her since she died. She had hypertension, now she is gone. You just have to live your life. As far as I am concerned, people will definitely talk, whether you do right or wrong. When you know that you cannot please everybody in life, that is when you start living. That is as far as I am concerned."
Before Damoche's murder, okada activities had been restricted in the state, and now, the state governor, Babatunde Raji Fashola, is using the Damoche murder as an opportunity to campaign against Okada riding. Condemning the gruesome killing of the singer cum student, Fashola urged residents to see reason for restriction of commercial Okada operators in the state.
He said that the recent murder and previous ones buttressed the state government's objectives of taming crime through the new road traffic law which restricts the activities of commercial motorcycle popularly called Okada.
"Most dastardly acts are perpetrated with the use of okada so residents have to be security conscious and on their guard all the time. On Thursday, Damino Damoche was shot at the entrance gate of LASU. Those who perpetrated the evil act used Okada.
"Just one month ago, a medical doctor was killed by some armed men who were riding Okada. The doctor would have been of benefit to those in need of medical services.
"Some people may be saying that the ban on Okada has rendered them useless. Is this a suitable business, a business that has led to the death of many who could contribute effectively to the development of the country especially Lagos State?" Lamenting further, he said, "Those who perpetrate these evil acts aren't spirits. We (Lagos residents) are the ones offering themshelter when they come to the state."
"Anyone you suspect doesn't live in your neighbourhood, report such people to the nearest police station, the chairman of their Community Development Area, CDA, and landlords should ensure that they don't rent their house to criminals."
The student who is in E2, earlier had a bet with some guys in his lecture hall that he could wear a wrapper to school and the guys promised to give him N20,000 if he did.
Guess what? The dude took the risk but lo and behold, after he stepped into his hall, the gals who could not hide their amusement started shouting, yelling and chanting.
The noise eventually attracted the security officers to the Hall and the boy was fished out & planked with heavy logs of wood.
These action nearly stirred a riot in the school, as students detested the brutality saying the guy had the right to wear anything he chooses.
Specifically, the donations are to be used in the Faculty of Science for the building of an administrative block, a library, an auditorium and a lecture hall as well as for landscaping.
Danjuma, who received the honorary Doctor of Science degree for his contribution to the development of the nation, said that northern Nigeria is on fire and all northerners must come together to save the region.
Gen. Danjuma said, "I give credit to Sir Ahmadu Bello and all those whose foresight and sacrifices gave birth to this institution, whose contributions to the growth of Nigeria cannot be quantified."
He also praised the vice-chancellor and the members of staff of the university for sustaining the tradition of excellence for which the university had become famous.
"I bear witness to the fact that many of the products of this university have since become worthy ambassadors of the school and of Nigeria. It is for this reason that I am committed to playing whatever role I can in aiding and facilitating the achievements of this university for her noble objectives.
"The university's impact on the nation is considerable. Its impact on the northern states is greater," he added.
Gen. Danjuma further said: "ABU has come a long way, starting as it did with a population of 423 students and maturing into what it is today with a student and staff population of over 50,000.
It gladdens my heart to note that ABU is the most cosmopolitan tertiary institution of learning in Nigeria both in terms of staff and student profiles.
I understand that most local government areas in Nigeria have student(s) in the university and, similarly, all states of the federation have representatives in the staff profile of the university.
"I congratulate the institution on being the only truly federal university in the country.
The university's impact on the nation is considerable. Its impact on the northern states is even more. Some of our greatest nationalists are products of this institution."

Damoche was murdered by suspected cultists on Thursday evening at the Lagos State University, LASU,main gate in Ojo.
Though GISTBANK couldn't get images from his burial reportedly held in Badagry on Saturday morning, we were able to obtain images from the candlelight procession held in his honour.
GISTBANK reliably gathered from witnesses that colleagues of late Damoche in the music industry shunned the event as most of them didn't show up.
One of the participants said, "I hate Nigeria music industry. We expected some of his friends in the industry to come around but no one showed up. I am an entertainer and not an artiste, but we need to show love and last respect for the dead."
GISTBANK further gathered that only Zeeworld, a fast-rising up and coming artiste, was present at the event, along with few relatively known artistes. Zeeworld was reportedly angry at the treatment late Damoche got from his colleagues in the entertainment industry.
The candlelight procession took place at late Damoche's parents' house located at Ile-Pako area of Agege, Lagos.
